What is sewers for adoption 8?
Sewers for adoption sets out standards and provides guidance for developers on the design and construction of sewers and related features that will be adopted by water and waste water companies in England and Wales in accordance with section 104 of the water industry act 1991. Sewers for Adoption 8 currently being worked on by Water UK with the main purpose of setting out the standards for adoptable sustainable drainage systems.
Why is there a pre-implementation version of Sewers for adoption 8?
Water UK are currently working on Sewers for Adoption 8 and it is expected to be implemented in mid 2019. The advance publication of the pre-implementation version is intended to allow sufficient time for changes to policies and procedures to made by water and sewerage companies, planning authorities and developers in order to comply with the new manual. The final approval for adoption code however lies with Ofwat and therefore the guidance included in the implementation version could be subject to change.
Why is SFA8 so significant for SuDs in the UK?
SuDS became an integral part of planning policy back in 2014 but implementation of SuDS has been limited due to issue of the adoption of SuDS by local authorities or water companies. In order to make systems adoptable, design of SuDS has often been compromised leading to many schemes purely being used to manage water without fulfilling the four pillars of SuDs design, outlined by the SuDS manual. Sewers for adoption 8 will allow a route for the adoption of SuDS that allows water quality, amenity and biodiversity as well as water quantity to be properly considered during the design stage allowing it to be fully integrated into the surface water management and urban design process.
What are the key considerations for SuDs design included in SF8?
The new manual will encourage the use of SuDS and their consideration early on in planning to ensure that they are part of the holistic design of the development . Designers will need to ensure that they fully consider installation, health and safety risk assessments, maintenance and access requirements of both hard and soft SuDS as part of their designs.
